Episode 316. Christmas with Elly Ameling

In February our beloved Elly Ameling turns 92. I cannot think of another classical singer who recorded more Christmas albums over the course of her career. One of the most obscure of these is the 1980 release “Christmas with Elly Ameling,” which was briefly available on LP, but never re-released in any format. I present it to you here complete, albeit reordered. A highlight is her performance of the delightful “Weihnachtslieder” by the German romantic composer Peter Cornelius, accompanied by Dalton Baldwin. Also included are works by Alphons Diepenbrock, Hugo Wolf, Alessandro Scarlatti, Richard Strauss, and Max Reger. That record is supplemented by excerpts from two of her earliest recordings, 1960’s “A Christmas Fantasy,” alongside Countermelody favorite Bernard Kruysen; and 1963’s “Christmas Music of the Renaissance.” Also included are a Haydn Advent cantata and two traditional Spanish carols 1977’s “Christmas Songs from Europe,” arranged by Joaquín Nin; rounded off by two exquisite Bach selections from an even rarer Elly recording, a 1979 festive Christmas concert at the Grote Kerk in Monnickendam. All of these represent Elly Ameling at her charming and exquisite best and are sure to put even the Scroogiest of my listeners in the Christmas spirit.

Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel’s lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody’s core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Episode 122. Auld Acquaintance II

Part Two of my “Auld Acquaintance” mini-series on Countermelody continues the exploitation of even more artists who have already been featured on the podcast, but in rare recordings that have only recently come into my collection. Today’s episode begins with a tribute to the German-based African American mezzo-soprano Gwendolyn Killebrew, who died on Christmas Eve at the age of 80. Featured artists in the main episode include Paul Robeson, Magda Olivero, Edda Moser, Ileana Cotrubas, Carol Brice, Margaret Price, Igor Gorin, Josephine Baker, Eidé Noréna, Alberta Hunter, Thomas Carey, Christa Ludwig, Sylvia Sass, Francisco Araiza, William Warfield, and many, many more singing everything from reggae to Rigoletto. 2021 gets a better send-off than it deserves, what with these singers and this music that will certainly help us all to approach the upcoming New Year “keeping the song in our hearts!”

Episode 13. Christmas with the Tenors

This week is the first of two episodes featuring Christmas music. I decided to feature tenors, but with a difference: none of The Three Tenors will put in an appearance. In compensation, this week I feature a panoply of superb tenors (including Fritz Wunderlich, Georges Thill, Richard Lewis, Roland Hayes, Tino Rossi, Franco Corelli, Ernst Haefliger, Richard Tauber, Karl Erb, and Matthew Swensen) in repertoire ranging across the spectrum (Handel, Adam, Gounod, Bach, Berlin, and traditional Weihnachtsmusik, with some surprises along the way). The episode concludes with a brief musical tribute to Dalton Baldwin, Gérard Souzay’s partner and collaborator, who died on 12 December, a week to the day before his 88th birthday.
